Thriller sub-genres and hybrids

When it comes to the thriller genre there are so many different types of films made with thriller in mind that there are many sub genres; all different to the other. Below are gonna be the different sub genres in the thriller genre and how each one differs to the other:

CONSPIRACY THRILLER:

Typically it involves a protagonist being an ordinary every day reporter, journalist or someone in the business of "going behind the scenes" and nosing around to find out the truth. In conspiracy thrillers these reporters tend to unravel a secret of powerful companies or governments and are therefore trapped by the companies trying to keep their secrets under cover. Propaganda is a big part of conspiracy thrillers as it shows a very biased view to the destruction of powerful companies and secrecy of governments.

CRIME THRILLER:
This type of thriller focuses mostly on the actions leading up to and the progression through crime. It can also show the perspective of the criminal him/herself however with much more suspense and tension. The most common crime thrillers have themes of heists, murders, robberies, shoot outs, double crosses etc. Although there is a psychological thriller hybrid, crime thrillers use traits of psychological thrillers in order to intensify the suspense and tension as criminals stereotypically "play with the mind" or try to outsmart the rest of society.

DISASTER THRILLER:
The theme of survival is the main focus in disaster thrillers. It tends to be a sequence of "a raise against time" for the characters to save themselves from either an artificial or a natural

disaster such as hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods etc. In the past few year the "end of the world" disaster thrillers have been very popular such as "the day after tomorrow" and "2012". The thrillers show the traumatic scenarios that could or even have happened and how it affects man kind, how it can bring characters together and how it can tear them apart.

MYSTERY THRILLER:
Mystery thrillers tend to be very similar to crime thrillers are most of the time the mystery that is trying to get figured out is the whereabouts of a criminal or his/her next move. Typically the focus is on the investigator's journey finding clues and trying to "connect the dots". This hybrid really engages the audience as they can try connect all the clues together along with the main character and they might even figure out before the actually character. Mystery thrillers can really emphasize tension and suspense especially when using a red herring meaning that all the clues given is a lie or to deceive the audience.

POLITICAL THRILLER:
Similar to conspiracy thrillers, it looks at the secrecy and destruction behind enemy lines: the government. There could be two points taken with this hybrid: either there is a protagonist OUTSIDE the government and tries to unravel their lies to save the society OR there is a protagonist on the INSIDE of the government and try to protect the government from outside enemies. The prevention of war tends to be a popular theme with political thrillers.

PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER:
Could be one of the most popular thriller hybrids used by directors. This particular hybrid's traits can be seen in almost every single thriller hybrid there is as it allows to create a lot of suspense and tension to keep it's audience on the edge of their seats. The audience's mind is constantly played with in these movies. Red herrings are largely used in this hybrid as the directors like to use clues to make the audience think they have figured out the plot yet it will surprise them right at the end for the "dramatic suspenseful ending". There is real detail in a character's mentality and thought process.

RELIGIOUS THRILLER:

This hybrid really pays attention to detail and unravels the truth behind religion and religious views and conspiracies. The main theme tends to have the moral message of good overcoming evil however for extra suspense and tension directors and producers sometimes show the difference in the world when the good is weak and the evil is stronger than anyone could over come. Religious thrillers are not the most popular to make however when they are produced there are plenty of opportunities to embed suspense and tension as there are so many questions and conspiracies when it comes to religion there if producers show a different view on these questions it can keep the audience questioning.

SUPERNATURAL THRILLER:
This hybrid is brilliant to do as it perfectly emphasizes suspense and tension to not only keep the audience aware but to throw them off and scare them at the same time. It tends to be about something other worldly or simply "supernatural" that a protagonist either must over come or understand. On the other hand the protagonist can end up being the one with a "supernatural" power or a "gift" that they must either control or have to over come as it could bring new dangers. The main purpose of this hybrid is to create fear in the audience and keep them constantly guessing and engaged.
