In media, genre is a loose category of media products. Inclusion into a genre is covered by sets of codes and conventions and iconography.
Film genres can be distinguished into two different categories:
ICONOGRAPHY: A set of visual visual representations in a media text, that taken together indicate its genre. It is often focused around mise en scene.
CODES AND CONVENTIONS: The signifiers we expect to see in a genre; a system of 'rules' that are established by practice and through which producers contruct texts in terms of genre and audiences de-construct them. Our expectations of a genre in terms of elements such as character, plot, sound and them.

-Legal Thrillers( The Pelican Brief)

Sub-Genres In Terms Of Audiences:
Each and every person has there own taste and preferences towards the types of movies that enjoy the most, and the different film genres aim to appeal to certain age groups, different personalities and gender. For example Historical movies would appeal to the older age and perhaps people who show an interest in History, whereas Espionage Thrillers which contain a lot fast paced action would appeal to the younger variety of audiences ranging from mid teens to mid twenties and mainly males, finally Romantic typed Thrillers would appeal to mainly females and even couples.
